Senior Service Offerings

Senior Transportation Program

Orland Township provides curb-to-curb service to seniors, ages 55 and older that live within the boundaries of Orland Township. Transportation is available to shopping areas, senior centers and other service providers within Orland Township.  Transportation to medical appointments outside Orland Township boundaries can also be provided. Transportation service is available Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.   

Senior Drop-In Center

Orland Township Activity Center is open on Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents have the opportunity to play cards and bingo while enjoying refreshments. A healthy snack is always provided and on occasion, sandwiches, hot dogs or pizzas are served. This popular social opportunity offers seniors a place to gather and make new friends. Residents may participate both days

Senior Health Insurance Program

Orland Township’s FREE Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) provides assistance to seniors in need of help with Medicare claims and statements, as well as help with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage.

Counselors, trained and certified with the Illinois Department of Insurance, are available by appointment to answer questions about Medicare and Medicare Supplemental Insurance.

Rules of the Road

This is a review course for senior citizens who are required to take the written or driving tests in order to renew their driver’s license.  The course provides knowledge and the confidence needed to pass the driver’s license renewal exam. Classes are currently offered six times a year free of charge.

RTA Ride Free Program

Orland Township is an RTA key center, providing photo service and registration. Senior citizens, ages 65 and older, can register, in person, for the Seniors Ride Free card. Individuals who are disabled and are receiving help through the State of Illinois program IL-1363 may also register for the free ride program.

Income Tax Assistance

Orland Township offers assistance with completing state and federal income tax forms to area seniors in need. The tax preparers are volunteers who have been trained through AARP and PLOWS Council on Aging.


The following documents are needed in order to complete the forms:

  • Last year’s tax return, real estate tax bill, a Social Security statement, any interest statements or 1099 forms and any additional documentation of importance.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling the township.

Illinois Cares Rx

Illinois Cares Rx

The State of Illinois believes everyone deserves access to good, affordable health care and no senior or person with a disability should have to worry about how to pay for the high cost of prescription drugs. Illinois Cares Rx provides state prescription assistance to people with and without Medicare. Illinois Cares Rx provides two prescription drug benefits: Illinois Cares Rx Plus and Illinois Cares Rx Basic.

55 Alive Defensive Driving Class

This two-day class is designed to help older drivers improve their skills and prevent traffic accidents. Course completion may qualify participants for a discount on the liability portion of one’s automobile insurance. Classes are held in the Orland Township Activity Center from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.


Participants must attend both days. There is a $12.00 fee for AARP members and a $14.00 fee for non-members. This fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Registration is required.
 

Diabetic Shoe Entitlement

Orland Township, in conjunction with EMB Suppliers, sponsors a diabetic shoe entitlement program to benefit individuals with diabetes. The program, certified by Medicare and in partnership with the American Diabetes Association, provides protective and therapeutic footwear, at no cost, for individuals living with diabetes.
Diabetics, who are covered by Medicare, are entitled to one pair of shoes per year, plus three pairs of insoles. The individually fitted shoes feature extra depth, molded insoles and protected toes and they are designed exclusively for comfort and support.

Home Repair

How can a senior citizen find a dependable handyman (someone who typically deals with projects that are too small for large contractors and too tricky or time consuming for the average homeowner) to do some work around the house? It can be a challenge to find someone to return calls, show up on time and complete the job properly. Seniors want someone reliable who will do the job correctly and complete the project in a timely manner.  Orland Township has expanded its handyman program to include qualified and professional “handymen” to handle minor home repair needs.

Senior Luncheons

Multiple times a year, Orland Township hosts luncheons for participating seniors. The luncheons consist of a hot catered meal and an afternoon of entertainment by fantastic performers: singers, musicians and comedians.  Lunch generally consists of an entree, vegetable, potato, salad, rolls, dessert and a beverage served promptly at noon.

Senior Phone Programs

Free Amplified Phone Program

The Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC) has expanded its mandated program to include free amplified telephones to those who qualify. Requirements include, one must be a resident of Illinois, one must have a standard phone service in their home and a physician must certify that an individual is unable to use one. There are no age or income requirements. If in need of this service, please stop by the Orland Township Office to pick up an application.

Five Wishes

There are many things in life that are out of one’s control. Five Wishes gives seniors control of an important issue, how a person is treated in the event of a serious illness. Complete a simple form that clearly states one’s intentions. Once the form is completed and signed, it is legally valid in Illinois.

Senior Reading Program

Orland Township, in conjunction with the Orland Park Library, provides residents with an opportunity to sign up for library cards and borrow books and DVDs during Orland Township’s regularly scheduled Drop-In Center.


The Orland Park Library brings book carts to the Activity Center on the first and third Wednesday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Take advantage of this great opportunity and borrow a good book, whether it’s a good mystery, romance novel or work of non-fiction.

The Touch of “Heeling”

Therapy dogs are available to visit with members of the Senior Drop-In Center. A therapy dog is trained to provide comfort and affection to those in need, as well as create an increased calmness.
Each dog is friendly, gentle, patient and comfortable in any given situation. All participating dogs are up-to-date on vaccinations and physicals and are certified members of Touch of Healing Dogs, which requires a strict certification process.
